Joseph Q Daily

Born in 1981 to Illustrator parents, Joseph was fortunate to have been raised in a highly creative environment.
He began his formal artistic training in high school, where instructor Susan Jewett laid a strong foundation for his developing talents.
He went on to study painting at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

Though Joseph was able to sustain a trickle of portrait commissions after graduating in 2003, work was scarce through the next two years.
The tide turned in May of 2005, when a portrait of his then-fiancee's father won Best of Show at the Portrait Society of America's Annual Portrait Conference.
A fortuitous meeting with Minnie S. Churchill, Granddaughter-in-law of Sir Winston S. Churchill and director of the Churchill heritage and keynote speaker at the conference - threw a struggling career into swift success.
Joseph now maintains a steady stream of commissions from clients on both sides of the Atlantic, traveling to the U.K. several times per year.

In the meantime, Joseph's marriage to Kathryn has developed into a very special working partnership.
For a time she collaborated closely on every portrait, but recently she has unfolded as subject, rather than artist.
From their home, a small cabin in rural northeastern Pennsylvania, they work together to express their shared personal vision of life in Creation, with Joseph as artist and Kathryn as model.

While they continue to welcome the many wonderful opportunities that portraiture affords, they look forward to spending more and more time creating paintings that come from within.

Accompanying some of the images are notes from Kathryn, which I quote here verbatum.

"The Sun moves into Capricorn on the shortest day of the year, the Winter Solstice. This sign is important to me on a personal level, as I seem often to be in the vicinity of someone born during this time (my father and brother included).
Meeting a new Capricornian often heralds a new life phase for me. A friend once told me that elderly people frequently "cross over" from this life to the next... during this time of year. She and I found ourselves feeling a kind of "passing on," not a physical death, but a departure from how things had always been. We took note of the steps taken together, and recognized we had reached a point of growth in our lives, one to which it was impossible to return. Here, I pick my way down the slope gingerly, bodyweight shifting over an irrevocably, crumbled stone barrier: the journey continues".

"During the very sensitive time of year that is Aries, the earth renews herself. At some point previously in March, Winter seems to hang heavily over the land. And then the earth undergoes a most miraculous change, and with remarkable bravery and faith, new life stretches tenuously, toward the ever increasing light.

The painting shows me standing alone in a forest, barefoot, and clad in white. Winter winds still tug at the emerging and delicate life around me. But I stand with confidence. I have faith that the promises of Nature will be fulfilled. I turn away from the deadened tree and look to branches fresh with buds, toward new life and rejuvenation".

"Reflections" was painted entirely from life this Summer (which meant an unfortunate amount of mosquito bites for me!) It was really an experiment for Joseph, as he strove to free himself from using photography in the painting process. It was painted on our property, next to the lake that often appears in his paintings. Joseph has always regarded this painting as a step in the direction his hopes to take his art".

"The sun moves into Cancer at the start of Summer, beginning with the longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice. It's a sign that can be associated with deep emotions, and with motherhood, home, and family.

My family celebrated the wedding of my older brother, which occasioned our traveling to my hometown-something we hadn't done since moving away nearly a year before. The pull of the old environment was startling to me, but I felt for the first time I could move freely through family and still remain true to my hopes and convictions. Even more encouraging was realizing I could uplift those around me. Home can be viewed in many different lights, but this painting expresses the desire to return to my spiritual home, to move ever upward on my path as a developing human being. I now felt I could carry that sense of home within me".
