Peter was born in February 1951, of an English mother and an Estonian father. He started his working life as a toolmaker, and designer of aluminium extrusion dies, but began to paint in 1979. Entirely self-taught, he turned professional in 1983.
He has an absolute love of oil painting and especially admires the masters of Dutch Painting of the seventeenth century, which is reflected, in his own work. In 1995 Peter paid a visit to his fathers homeland, in Tallinn the capitol, he saw an exhibition “ Still Life,” by Olav Maran a renowned Estonian artist. This modern painter who worked in the traditional manner, had such an effect on Peter that upon his return he set to work researching “Still Life” painters such as, Willem Kalf and De Heem.
After experimenting with priming his own panels and canvases with different colours, and painting with thick and thin paint and glazing on top, in the style of the “Old Masters,” he has developed a style with detail and atmosphere that is essential to his portrayal of fine wines, whiskey, port, fruit and cheeses. His is a laborious and pains taking technique, but his diligence is rewarded by the beautiful pieces he produces. In this modern world Peter’s paintings bring great pleasure to those who can appreciate and enjoy his skill and composition.
Peter Ado Kotka’s originals are in private collections all over the world.
